Greg B and Doss
Greg served in the U.S. Army, including three campaigns in Iraq and two in Afghanistan. While serving in Mosul, Iraq, Greg was struck by a suicide bomb and was severely injured. Along with being in a wheelchair for 3.5 years, he suffered from traumatic brain injury (TBI) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). To help with both of these conditions, Greg got Doss from Partners for Patriots.
Due to TBI, Greg’s balance and equilibrium are affected. Doss is there to help Greg if he loses his balance. He is also trained in a specific procedure to help Greg get up if he falls. Doss is also trained to intervene in ways that help Greg if he notices any sign of anxiety or stress.
Their bond is deep and permanent, and Doss is such a devoted helper that he has even assisted other veterans. At an in-patient treatment program that Greg attended, he noticed Doss instinctively went to help other veterans who were showing signs of need, and they benefited tremendously from being able to interact with Doss.
All in all, Doss has given Greg the confidence to expand his activities, go new places, and live his best life. Greg said “(Before), I wouldn’t even go to the store. But with Doss, I can go places.” He reflected on Doss’s impact on his life, then summed it up with one of his favorite quotes: “In my darkest hour I reached for a hand, and found a paw”
